The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that it has added the "Persian Gulf Waterway Management Authority," an office established by the Islamic Republic to manage the transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, to its sanctions list.

This move follows escalating tensions over the control of maritime transit in the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran's efforts to enforce new regulations on passing ships.

The newly established Persian Gulf Waterway Management Authority has been designated as the entity responsible for coordinating maritime traffic, issuing transit permits, and setting shipping regulations in the Strait of Hormuz. In recent weeks, the Islamic Republic has attempted to exert greater surveillance and control over vessel movements through this body.

On May 21, the authority's official account on the social media platform X announced that the jurisdictional boundaries for the management of the Strait of Hormuz had been defined, and that the transit of ships through this zone is permissible only with prior coordination and authorization.
