The May heatwave has claimed its tenth swimming victim, as 18,000 suffer water shortages and lightning storms amid the 31C heat. Emergency services scrambled to the scene at Galley Hill Road in Swanscombe, Kent, yesterday afternoon after concerns were raised for a young boxer who is believed to have entered a pond near Northfleet at around 2.15pm. Police confirmed this morning that the body of a teenage boy was recovered. It follows the deaths of at least nine others in incidents in the sea and in lakes during the Bank Holiday heatwave, which saw unexpected lightning storms and heavy downpours across the midwest last night. Seven teenagers, a grandfather in his 60s and a woman in her 70s are known to have died - including two teenagers pulled from the water yesterday. Kent Police said in a statement: 'Kent Police was called to Galley Hill Road in Swanscombe at 2.55pm on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 following a report of concern for a swimmer in a pond.'Officers attended along with the Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service, where the body of a teenage boy was recovered.'His death is not being treated as suspicious at this time and a report will be prepared for the coroner.'
