The mayor of Kardzhali, Erol Myumyun, was detained on Thursday and taken in for questioning, according to reports from BNT and Nova TV citing their sources. Municipal officials confirmed that he was brought in for questioning by law enforcement authorities.
According to information from the Kardzhali Municipality press center, Myumyun was transferred to the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Kardzhali, where he is currently giving testimony in an ongoing pre-trial investigation involving alleged large-scale official crimes.
Police searches were also carried out inside municipal buildings as part of the same investigation, according to public broadcaster BNT.
The case prompted a political reaction in the city, with activists from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) gathering outside the local police headquarters shortly after Myumyun was taken in, according to reports from bTV.
Erol Myumyun has been a long-standing figure in local politics. Between 2015 and 2019, he served as a municipal councilor representing the MRF in Kardzhali. In the 2023 local elections, he was elected mayor with more than 60 percent of the vote.
