Posco’s No. 2 steel converter applies an autonomous operation system. [POSCO]

Posco is rolling out a digital transformation (DX) strategy across the company, from administrative work to manufacturing, to bolster future competitiveness, transforming its workplaces into “smart” factories and offices.

The company aims to automate manufacturing in high-risk tasks and reflect worker knowledge through AI.

In steelmaking, the company successfully applied an autonomous operation system last year. Robots are used to automatically detect the location of slag to remove it, and AI analyzes variables to determine optimal oxygen levels. These automatic and intelligent models have helped strengthen productivity and safety.

Posco has also adopted AI and lidar sensors for use on cranes to load and handle wire rods, an industrial feat that overcomes the awkward shape of the loads. AI is also used to enhance product inspection, as well as in steel manufacturing and logistics.
