The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Latur-based paediatrician Dr Manoj Shirure and Pune-based physics teacher Tejas Harshadkumar Shah in connection with the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak case, taking the total number of arrests in the investigation to 13, reports TOI.The agency said it had conducted several rounds of questioning of both accused before formally arresting them, according to TOI report. Investigators have also examined digital evidence, call detail records and financial transactions as part of the probe.A Delhi court on Wednesday remanded Shirure and Shah to five days of CBI custody after Special Judge Vidya Prakash allowed the agency’s plea for further custodial interrogation. The two accused will be produced before the court again on June 1. Co-accused PV Kulkarni and Shivraj Motegaonkar were remanded to 14-day judicial custody.Role of accused under investigationCBI officials told TOI Shirure was among five doctors suspected of paying for leaked examination papers for their relatives. Shah, who has been associated with Dr Abhang Prabhu Medical Academy since the 2021-22 academic year, was identified as a physics teacher and not a student, as had been mentioned in an earlier remand report.Sachin Haldavnekar, director of the Abhang Prabhu Medical Academy, said Shah had worked with the institute for four years and also served as chief operating officer. He stated that the institute had no connection with Shah’s alleged actions and was cooperating with investigators.According to the CBI, WhatsApp chats and financial transactions linked Shah to the husband of co-accused Manisha Havaldar, the suspended headmistress of a Pune school who was arrested on May 22.Investigators alleged that Shah’s number was saved as “God” in Havaldar’s phone. The agency said Shah received leaked physics questions from Havaldar and passed them to co-accused Shivraj Motegaonkar, founder of the Latur-based RCC Coaching Institute, who then allegedly shared them with Shirure.Special coaching sessions and money trailThe CBI alleged that Shirure and chemistry lecturer PV Kulkarni conducted special coaching sessions for children of influential families who reportedly paid between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 10 lakh each.Investigators said relatives of the accused and children of prominent individuals from Latur attended these sessions. The agency has also traced online financial transfers from parents of beneficiaries to bank accounts linked to the accused.TOI sources within the CBI said the agency was considering turning Shirure and Motegaonkar’s son into approvers. Investigators claimed Motegaonkar’s son told officials that his father had access to questions from a “mock test” nearly 10 days before the NEET-UG examination.Digital evidence seizedThe CBI said Shah had written down physics questions dictated by Havaldar, photographed the handwritten sheet and shared the images with her husband. Havaldar’s phone has been seized by investigators. The agency has conducted searches at 49 locations so far and seized documents, laptops and mobile phones that are currently being analysed. Investigators are also examining digital devices, bank transactions and call records as part of the ongoing probe.
