The death of a 16-year-old girl in Blagoevgrad and the hospitalization of another teenager with serious injuries after both fell from the fifth floor of an apartment building on Sunday has reignited concerns in Bulgaria over drug distribution among minors, institutional failures, and the accessibility of narcotics among students. The tragedy has prompted calls for urgent preventive measures, stricter enforcement, and broader public discussion about the growing problem.

Students themselves say access to drugs has become increasingly easy, particularly through social circles and online communication. Karina Terziyska, an 11th-grade student, said in front of BNT that narcotics are often available through acquaintances and peer networks.

“In my opinion, access to drugs is very easy and is becoming easier, especially if the student is in such an environment. Everyone knows someone who distributes them,” she said.

According to her, drugs can also be ordered through phones and messaging applications.

“One phone call and one text message separate my classmates from receiving these substances,” she added, while clarifying that neither she nor her close friends had personally been offered drugs.
