In the 2028/29 financial year, the Government hopes to reach an operating surplus.
That is a year earlier than predicted at the previous Budget.
At that point, the tax take will exceed government expenses. New Zealand will be able to stop borrowing to keep the lights on and start paying down debt.
This forecast has a big caveat. The Treasury assumes the Middle East fuel crisis will be temporary.
