DETROIT — Perhaps it’s time for the Detroit Tigers to take a page from Seattle Mariners fans and consult an Etsy witch. Maybe the team should hire someone to ensure all black cats and ladders are removed from the area surrounding Comerica Park.Something, anything to break the spell of poor play, bad luck and rampant injuries that have threatened to sink a once-promising season into the dirt.On Wednesday, Casey Mize was dealing for four innings, giving the Tigers exactly the type of start they needed. And then, way out beyond the left field fence, Drew Anderson rose from his seat and started throwing. The sight was curious at first. It quickly became concerning. TV cameras caught Mize speaking with a trainer and then heading down the dugout steps. A review of the footage revealed that Mize had grimaced after throwing a strike-three slider to Jorge Soler.Mize was only in his third start back from a stay on the injured list with a right adductor strain.By the ninth inning, A.J. Hinch and a trainer went to check on 38-year-old closer Kenley Jansen after an awkward follow-through. Jansen remained in the game and recorded an out. But he then walked Mike Trout on four pitches, struggling to apply the brakes in his delivery each time. Jansen glanced toward the dugout after the walk, and Hinch removed him from the game. Thanks to strong work from Anderson and others, the Tigers went on to defeat the Angels 4-0. The victory was needed — they all are at this point — and helped the Tigers (22-34) avoid unseating the Angels for the worst record in the American League. But any relief or celebration was muted by news far too fitting for the 2026 Tigers.Hinch described the injuries to Mize and Jansen as right groin tightness.“We’ll get them evaluated,” Hinch said. “Casey was awesome. Was throwing the ball great. He’s had this before. It was the issue earlier, so we were very cautious, and he didn’t feel like it was as bad as before, but we’re going to give him the full workup … I don’t even really have a gut feeling on that one, or Kenley’s, to be honest.”In the clubhouse after the game, Mize was at his locker. If there is a silver lining, it’s that Mize reiterated that the tightness in his groin was less severe than what he experienced when he left his April 28 start against the Braves.“To give myself the best shot, I just didn’t want to go back out for the fifth tonight,” Mize said. “I thought it would be best to call it and see how the next couple of days go.”The bad news, though, is obvious. Mize had struck out six hitters through four innings. He has a 2.27 ERA this season. He is pitching the best baseball of his career, but he has been unable to stay healthy.Just when the Tigers appeared closer to welcoming meaningful reinforcements — Troy Melton is back, Tarik Skubal is facing hitters and Justin Verlander looked better in his Wednesday throwing session — they face the possibility of losing yet another starter. The Tigers still have 14 players on their major-league injured list.“It’s tough,” Mize said. “You want the nights to be perfect. Even with a win, there’s still a couple negatives tonight, which is frustrating, which makes me feel horrible. So yeah, it’s tough.”Jansen wasn’t in the clubhouse after the game, so there’s even less information on his injury. Like Mize, though, Jansen might be dealing with a recurring issue. Jansen had previously experienced discomfort in his right groin after an April 15 outing against the Royals. He pitched in four games after that tweak but surrendered walk-off home runs in two of those outings.Jansen avoided the IL but went five days between appearances before returning to play.“When you can’t push off, it’s tough,” he said in early May. “Definitely not healthy. I don’t want to cost the team games if I’m not right.”It is possible the Tigers can avoid the worst-case scenario in both instances. Mize and Jansen injured their drive legs — the leg they use to push off the rubber. Lower-half injuries can be tricky for pitchers because the last thing you want to do is start altering your mechanics, compensating elsewhere, and ending up hurting your arm.“When I hurt it last time, I was having conversations with guys: Do you think it’s better that it’s my drive leg instead of my plant?” Mize said. “I don’t know. It is what it is. It’s important that I feel good, but I also don’t want to be overcompensating elsewhere. That was something I had to be cognizant of when I was coming back a couple of weeks ago, and I feel I’ve done a good job of that.”From a look at the scoreboard, Wednesday should have been one of the Tigers’ brightest nights in quite some time. They held the Angels to two hits. They struck early against powerful Angels starter José Soriano. Spencer Torkelson responded from a four-strikeout game with three hits, including his eighth home run of the year.“I wanted to come in here and celebrate a win,” Hinch said in the team’s interview room. But all-around good days remain elusive for these Tigers. If they’re not beating themselves, it seems they’re dealing with some karmic force causing other things to go awry. For now, they will cross their fingers and hope a lengthy injured list doesn’t get even longer.“Believe it or not, there’s good news out there to get,” Hinch said. “I know it doesn’t feel like it when a couple of guys come out of the game. We’ll hope for the best.”
Injuries to Casey Mize, Kenley Jansen dampen a needed Tigers victory
It should have been a positive night after a 4-0 win over the Angels, but the injury bug continues to bite Tigers.
