A downtown cosmetic surgery clinic must pay a total of $21.5 million to about 7,000 patients for invasion of their privacy, a Toronto judge has ruled.Justice Paul Schabas also awarded an additional $1 million in punitive damages for lead doctor Martin Jugenburg’s “reprehensible” conduct, noting that he showed no remorse after having “abused his position of trust and betrayed his vulnerable patients from whom he was profiting.”The court confirmed that the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute (TCSI) had 24 surveillance cameras, located in the reception and waiting areas, hallways, a staff room and workplace areas, consultation and injections rooms, and in the operating room and post-operative recovery area. The only sign inside the clinic with information about the cameras, was obscured on a shelf in the operating room.
