Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service seized a container carrying around 22 tons of sports merchandise at the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo state, on May 20, including approximately 120,000 counterfeit jerseys. Among them were shirts from World Cup national teams — Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Japan and Mexico — as well as Brazilian clubs such as Flamengo and Santos. The unusual arrangement of the cargo, with two tons of suitcases placed at the front of the container to conceal the jerseys, caught inspectors’ attention because it differed from other recent seizures in which counterfeit goods were mixed with various types of merchandise.
In recent months, the agency also seized 15 other containers carrying about 75 tons of counterfeit products, totaling an estimated 428,000 sports jerseys confiscated. Last week, customs authorities shut down two shopping centers in the Brás district, in downtown São Paulo, seizing more team jerseys, shoes, perfumes and electronic cigarettes.
