Washington, May 27 (EFE).- United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his confidence on Wednesday that the talks between Washington and Havana will lead to «a good outcome» for the island’s residents. “We want something good for the Cuban people, and hopefully, there will be a good outcome for them. There needs to be,” Rubio said during a meeting at the White House. “It’s 90 miles from our shores. Having a failed state 90 miles from our shores is a threat to the national security of the United States,” he added. The US Secretary of State also criticized GAESA, the business megaconglomerate owned and operated by the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, saying “the country has been taken over by a company that controls 70% of the economy.” Adding that ”None of the money goes to help the Cuban people, none of it.” Since the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro (2013-2026) by US forces in January, Washington has been pressuring Cuba to undertake economic and political changes. President Donald Trump has threatened to “take control” of the country and Havana claims that the United States is preparing a military attack. The Trump administration has imposed an oil embargo on the island, which has exacerbated the country’s economic crisis, and last week filed a criminal indictment against former leader Raúl Castro (1959-2006), younger brother of late President Fidel Castro (1976-2008), for the deaths of four pilots from a Cuban exile organization 30 years ago. Washington and Havana are engaged in discreet negotiations, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently traveled to Cuba. The participation of Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, Raúl’s grandson, in those talks has also been reported. EFE er/mcd
