Anthony Gordon is set to move to the Camp Nou after Barcelona reached an agreement to sign the winger from Newcastle United. The Athletic revealed earlier on Wednesday that the La Liga champions had made Newcastle an offer. The two sides have now agreed a deal worth €80million (£69.3m; $93.2m) with a sell-on clause also included. Personal terms have been agreed by the 25-year-old, who had also been subject to interest from Bayern Munich.Gordon’s arrival may have implications for England team-mate Marcus Rashford too, who has spent the season on loan from Manchester United and was hoping to make that switch permanent.Gordon’s exit will also mark the start of what is expected to be a busy summer of transfers at Newcastle too, who finished a disappointing 12th in the Premier League. Here The Athletic’s Barcelona writer Pol Ballus, Newcastle writer George Caulkin, Manchester United writer Laurie Whitwell and data and tactics writer Conor O’Neill answer the key questions about the proposed deal. Their reporting is informed by sources who have been granted anonymity to discuss matters they are not cleared to speak publicly about. Why are Newcastle willing to sell Gordon? There are a few things to unpick here. Firstly, Newcastle do not wish to sell their best players as a matter of course. The club’s ambitions remain undimmed. Yet, as they have found this season, getting to the summit is neither easy or cheap and there are sharp consequences for mediocre transfer windows. They have had a few now, having failed to strengthen Eddie Howe’s team for too long or, as happened last summer, spending like a drunkard in a casino. The repercussions of Alexander Isak’s £125m sale to Liverpool are still being felt. The deal was painful and contentious, with the Sweden international effectively going on strike before his deadline-day departure. Newcastle had been held to ransom as they attempted to sign replacements and immediately got worse. It was messy, expensive and incoherent. The combination of those things leave Newcastle with an ageing squad and a dearth of quality. They need reinforcements across the pitch and, until they find a way of rivalling more established clubs for commercial revenue, selling well is the only way to do this. They have not been good at it, clinging on to players beyond their sell-by date.Newcastle’s speed is very deliberate. They did not have a sporting director or chief executive last summer and they were left in limbo. Now with sporting director Ross Wilson and CEO David Hopkinson in place, they have been negotiating with Barcelona and Bayern Munich in a bid to get this business done early. They are attempting to be energetic and forward-thinking and there may be a lucrative friendly or two with Barca ahead to sweeten the deal. There is a general feeling within the club that it is probably the right time for Gordon to move. Two years ago, it took all of Howe’s man-management skills to bring the winger around after he came close to joining Liverpool, the team he supported as a child. There is no will to go through that again. From this perspective, it is better to lance the boil quickly and move on.George CaulkinWhy do Barcelona want Gordon?Because they are looking for a wide attacker. Marcus Rashford acted as Barcelona’s back-up winger this season, but the Catalans have doubts over making a move for him. Regardless of Rashford staying or not, somebody has to fill that role in the team, and this is where Gordon is seen by senior executives in the club as a better fit.The club wants a versatile forward who can act on both flanks and provide top-quality depth to their attacking line. In Gordon, Barca’s decision-makers also see a player who, beyond his attacking qualities, provides that much required off-the-ball pressing. There is also the belief that mobile players and willing runners can also help maximise the qualities of Barcelona’s main star, Lamine Yamal. Gordon ticks all those boxes, and those at the club are convinced that playing under manager Hansi Flick will only help the England international to show his best version.
