The race for Te Tai Tokerau is on, with Te Pāti Māori confirming its candidate in the hotly contested seat.

Aperahama Edwards joins Labour's Willow-Jean Prime, the Greens Hūhana Lyndon and newly formed Te Tai Tokerau party's Mariameno Kapa-Kingi - who recently split from Te Pāti Māori after being expelled then reinstated.

It makes for a tight race, just five months out from the election.

RNZ spoke to the candidates following Te Pāti Māori's announcement.
