Kolkata: Following a crackdown on illegal Bangladeshis, hundreds of people have assembled at Hakimpur checkpost in North 24 Parganas district to try to return to their homeland. Some undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants have been kept at three holding centres in the district."I had a PAN, Aadhaar and ration card. I came in 2001 with my parents," a Bangladeshi immigrant from Khulna, waiting to go back to Bangladesh, said. Another person said BJP government does not want us to stay here; hence we are returning. "Trinamool leaders made voter cards and other documents for us," he said.Some said they came to West Bengal in 2001 while others claimed they were born here. Bachhu Munshi, resident of Jashor, claimed, "I voted in 2024 for Trinamool. I had come as a child with my parents. Voter card was made with the help of Trinamool.""I received Lakshmir Bhandar for the last two years. The Trinamool municipality did it," a Bangladeshi woman said.
