After days of evading police, Trinamool Congress MLA from Bishnupur Dilip Mondal was on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) arrested by the West Bengal police from Puri in Odisha. The MLA is likely to be brought to the city on transit remand.The Trinamool Congress MLA has allegedly threatened Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers during the West Bengal Assembly polls and a police complaint was filed against him. For the past two weeks the West Bengal police were on the lookout for the MLA and even arrested his son. Mr. Mondal is the first sitting MLA to be arrested by the West Bengal police.Since the BJP came to power in West Bengal almost hundred arrests have been made by the police, most of which have involved local level Trinamool Congress workers against whom allegations of corruption and post-poll violence in the 2021 Assembly elections have surfaced. Not only the police, but the Enforcement Directorate have arrested former Minister Sujit Bose for his alleged role in the Municipal recruitment scam.Mass resignationsWhile the Trinamool leaders are facing arrests all across the State, there have also been mass resignations. A day after participating in a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, senior Trinamool Congress leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar resigned from all organisational portfolios of the party today. The four-term MP wrote a letter to Trinamool State president Subrata Bakshi, urging him to accept her resignation letter. Dr Ghosh Dastidar is the not the only Trinamool leader to give up organisational post, several councillors of Trinamool Congress have resigned from the post. On Wednesday (May 27, 2026), Trinamool leader Sushanta Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty quit posts in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.Large amount of cash was recovered from the properties of Dipankar Bhattacharya, Chairman of Baduria Municipality. Mr. Bhattacharya was arrested a few days ago but on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) investigators found cash in several suitcases buried in the agricultural land owned by the Trinamool leader.The Trinamool leadership is facing another challenge that despite being the principle Opposition party in the State with 80 MLAs, no room has been allocated Leader of Opposition Sovandeb Chattopadhyay in the premises of State Assembly.On Wednesday (May 27, 2026), Mr. Chattopadhyay along with Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh held a sit-in protest outside West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose’s chamber for allegedly not meeting with them. “We have come to meet the speaker... Our senior most MLA is sitting here to talk to the Speaker... This is democracy...” Mr. Ghosh said.
