Tragic British tourist Ethan Lacey, 20, from Birmingham, has reportedly had his life support removed and has been transferred to a palliative care ward in Thailand after a truck 'ran over his head'17:39, 27 May 2026Updated 18:11, 27 May 2026The mum of a British tourist who was left critically injured after a truck ran him over in Thailand says she made the devastating decision to withdraw his life support, according to the family's GoFundMe page.‌Ethan Lacey, 20, remains in a critical condition after he fell from a moving pickup truck at a busy intersection in Pattaya - around 90 miles from Bangkok - on May 17.‌His mum, Kerry, 41, told how witnesses described him being run over by the vehicle's rear wheel, which "went over his head".‌Doctors carried out a CT and contrast scan of Ethan's body before telling his parents he was not "going to get any better" and that his only prospect of survival would leave him "bedridden", with medics informing them they could withdraw life support should they choose to do so.At 1.45pm on May 27, Ethan's life support was removed, a GoFundMe set up by his grandmother, Anthea Chatwin, said. He is currently breathing independently and has been transferred to a palliative care ward, the fundraiser adds.‌"After many heartbreaking family discussions, we made the devastating decision to agree to stop all active treatment and move Ethan onto palliative care because we were told there would be no quality of life for him, and that he would not be able to breathe on his own," the page reads."We signed the paperwork for treatment to be withdrawn. However, in what feels like a miracle, Ethan is still breathing and his vital stats remain quite stable."We are now desperately trying to explore every possible option to get him home to the UK. We have started getting medical repatriation quotes, but the costs are extremely high - currently coming back at around £150,000 or more."‌A friend in Thailand had reported Ethan missing on May 15 before his dad Kevin, 40, received an image via Facebook Messenger of his son lying in an intensive care unit.Kerry and Kevin immediately booked flights and have remained by Ethan's bedside ever since, reports Birmingham Live.‌"On Monday around 5am a friend he'd met out there rang us through messenger screaming down the phone but she couldn't speak English," Kerry said."I put down the phone and messaged and said 'please tell me what's going on' and 'please send a photo', because I thought it might not be him. She sent a photo and it was him in hospital – me, his dad and his nan got a flight straight over there".Ethan had been travelling through Bangkok following his arrival to see a relative two months earlier, before subsequently travelling to Pattaya. Kerry said he was last seen at a nightclub prior to the incident.‌The 20-year-old suffered three brain haemorrhages and required a drain to assist in treating a punctured lung. His father, Kevin, had initially located a second hospital willing to take on Ethan's case, but they requested additional scans after the family had been informed he was suffering from internal bleeding."The other hospital phoned and said before he is moved, we need a new CT scan and contrast scan of the body because he had internal bleeding, but we'd been told that had stopped," Kerry explains.Article continues below"They'd done the new CT scans and came back with the results – he wasn't going to get any better or severely better, the only chance was he'd be bedridden, so the doctor said now we could turn off life support if we wanted to".You can donate to the family's GoFundMe page to help bring Ethan home here.
