EECS Professor Jitendra Malik has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).

Announced today by the UK’s national academy of sciences, the prestigious election recognizes Malik alongside a cohort of over 90 outstanding researchers from across the globe who have made exceptional contributions to contemporary science, engineering, and technology. The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship comprising many of the world’s most eminent scientists and stands as the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence.

The Fellows join the ranks of Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Lise Meitner, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Dorothy Hodgkin.

Malik, the Arthur J. Chick Professor in the EECS, is internationally celebrated for his foundational and pioneering contributions to computer vision, machine learning, and robotics. His research has profoundly shaped how machines perceive, process, and understand visual data.

Malik is one of three UC Berkeley faculty members elected to the Royal Society this year. He is joined in the 2026 class by UC Berkeley Professors Barbara Romanowicz (Geophysics) and F. Dean Toste (Chemistry).
