The South Korean government has announced that it will summon the Islamic Republic’s ambassador to Seoul to protest an attack on a cargo ship belonging to the HMM shipping company. The vessel was targeted near the Strait of Hormuz in early May.
According to South Korea’s KBS network, Seoul officials have implicated the Islamic Republic in the incident based on their initial assessment and have placed the summoning of the Iranian diplomat on their agenda.
In a related development, some media outlets pointed to remarks made by Donald Trump after the incident, in which he identified the Islamic Republic as responsible for firing at the ship and urged South Korea to join U.S.-led maritime security initiatives in the region.
Authorities of the Islamic Republic had previously denied any involvement in the attack.
