Britain's most decorated gymnast retired from the sport after the Paris 2024 Olympics but a fourth-place finish was not the dream ending he envisioned and Whitlock returned to the stage hungry for more in November 2025.The 33-year-old is now looking ahead to a possible grand return at Glasgow 2026 in a competition he has won 10 medals in for Team England. Wilson made his own Team England debut alongside Whitlock in Scotland ’s second city 12 years ago and admitted his former teammate’s return to the arena did not come as a shock."I wasn't surprised at all," he said. "I remember having lots of conversations with people at Paris 2024 and saying that he won't be done. Max is the most decorated British gymnast ever and he probably will be for a lot of years to come."He's still got it in him with his body at 33 years old. If I still had it in my body, I would still be doing it because it's the best job in the world, so I understand exactly why he has. I know that he is going to be challenging on that pommel horse, he's the GOAT on there, so we'll see how it unfolds."Wilson will not be suiting up again this summer, having retired from the sport himself in early 2021 due to a series of health issues. But the Commonwealth Games live long in his memory, with the Leeds-born athlete having racked up five gold medals of his own at the event which kickstarted his sporting career."I remember I felt sick," said Wilson about Glasgow 2014. "I was the first man up on floor for Team England and I remember the coach at the time asking if I was alright because I looked drip white. But then I absolutely nailed my floor routine and then I felt like the rest was history from there. I realised very quickly that I love this environment. I belong here. And at 18 years old, that was a completely career changing moment for me."Team England’s official automotive partner Geely are playing a central role in England’s leg of the King’s Baton Relay, which takes place from May 26-31. Wilson was a key part in the baton's journey as it travelled to inspire the next generation of athletes at the Nile Wilson Gymnastic Academy in Leeds. It is a mission the 30-year-old feels impassioned about, having spent the majority of his athletic career, and since, posting gymnastics videos on his social media and YouTube to help get more people interested in the sport. Wilson was an early adoptee of the now fully fledged role of content creator, a job he still enjoys, with 1.6m followers on each of YouTube and TikTok, and another 933,000 on Instagram.Article continues below"It's a cool feeling to pioneer what's now very normal, on social media" he said. "When I started to create content online and build a bit of an audience, I realised the power and influence I have and how much of an incredible feeling it is to inspire someone."My life and business is getting as many children across the country and across the world into the sport that changed my life. That is, as good as, if not better than the feeling of winning a medal, to know that someone's watched my gymnastics or my silly videos that I post on the internet and thought ‘I will try gymnastics’."Team England are Ready to Win at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
