The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a public advisory warning citizens about a rise in cyber fraud cases involving fake online shopping advertisements circulating on social media platforms.Officials said cybercriminals are increasingly using sponsored ads on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram to promote fake offers on branded shoes, electronics, clothing, gadgets, insurance products and luxury items at heavily discounted prices. Victims are being diverted to fraudulent websites and fake payment gateways.According to the Bureau, in several cases victims either do not receive the products after making payments or are tricked into sharing sensitive financial and personal details, leading to financial fraud and identity theft. The TGCSB has identified several red flags, including unrealistic discounts, absence of cash-on-delivery options, newly created social media pages with limited followers, poorly designed websites with suspicious URLs, fake reviews and requests for advance payments only.Citizens have been advised to verify website URLs carefully before making payments, check the authenticity of social media pages, compare prices with official brand websites, avoid clicking on unknown advertisements, use secure payment methods and never share OTPs or banking credentials. The Bureau has urged victims of cyber fraud to immediately report incidents by dialling 1930, filing complaints on www.cybercrime.gov.in, and informing their banks or payment providers in case of fraudulent transactions.Officials have appealed to the public to remain vigilant while shopping online and avoid falling prey to fake e-commerce advertisements.
