In the May 2026 report titled “Nonstate Violators of Religious Freedom in Nigeria: Fulani Militants,” the USCIRF said Fulani militants were responsible for some of the “most visible and deadly attacks on religious communities” in the country in recent years.

A report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has alleged that an estimated 30,000 armed Fulani militant groups are responsible for carrying out widespread killings, church attacks, abductions, and violent land invasions targeting both Christian and Muslim communities across Nigeria.

In the May 2026 report titled “Nonstate Violators of Religious Freedom in Nigeria: Fulani Militants,” the USCIRF said Fulani militants were responsible for some of the “most visible and deadly attacks on religious communities” in the country in recent years.

The report stated that although the attacks often targeted Christians, Muslims had also been victims of raids, cattle theft, kidnappings, and deadly assaults by the armed groups.

According to USCIRF, an estimated 30,000 Fulani militants currently operate across Nigeria, particularly in the North-West, Middle Belt, and increasingly in Southern states.
