The first group of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic tensions arrived in Accra today, May 27, as authorities race to manage a widening humanitarian and diplomatic concern involving African migrants in the country.

The Government of Ghana has assured its citizens returning from South Africa following anti-immigrant protests that they would not be treated like refugees or abandoned persons, but would instead receive a heroic and royal welcome upon arrival in their home country.

Speaking while receiving the first batch of about 300 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, declared that the administration was fully prepared to reintegrate and support the returnees.

According to the minister, the Ghanaian government had already put in place a comprehensive support package for the citizens returning home after tensions and anti-immigrant protests reportedly escalated in parts of South Africa.
