Hull KR captain Elliot Minchella says he is eager to send departing boss Willie Peters off as a winner ahead of the Challenge Cup final on Saturday.Reigning champions Rovers will take on 2024 winners Wigan for the first piece of domestic silverware of the season at Wembley Stadium as they look to make it back-to-back Challenge Cup triumphs. In March, Peters announced he would be leaving Craven Park at the end of the campaign to become head coach of newly formed National Rugby League side Papua New Guinea Chiefs.Peters has taken Hull KR from a mid-table side to a Super League powerhouse, giving the club their first-ever domestic treble last term as well as becoming World Club Challenge champions in February.“This is definitely a trophy we want to retain to create some more history as a club together,” The 30-year-old said.Minchella is looking for back-to-back Challenge Cups (Richard Sellers/PA) (PA Wire)“Obviously, we’re disappointed to be losing him (Peters), but also we’re proud of what he’s going to go and do over there.“Not much has changed and we all we all want to send him off as a winner.“He’s transformed our club, transformed us as players. I’ve learned so much from him, helping me develop as a leader, as a man and I’ve got the utmost respect for him.“He wants to win and that’s infectious. I think we’ve all got that little bit more motivation to send him off as a winner.”The Bradford-born back-rower was working as a builder in his early days of playing rugby and has now developed into one of the best forwards in the division.Minchella was left out of the England side which lost to Australia in a first Ashes Test series since 2003 last year. But that has not knocked his ambition of trying to get himself back in the national team picture ahead of this year’s World Cup.He added: “I had a phone call with Shaun Wane the day after the Grand Final to say I won’t make the cut, it was tough to take.“I had ambitions to play in the ashes, but it wasn’t meant to be.“I would have loved to have been a part of it and as disappointed as everyone was with the result of the Ashes, I’ve got ambitions to play again.”Hull KR are seemingly back to their best following a tough start to the season which saw them lose three of their first four league matches, including a heavy 58-6 defeat to Leeds in Vegas. The run coincided with Peters’ leaving announcement, but Minchella insists that was not a factor. He said: “I don’t think Willie leaving the club at the end of the year contributed to that, it was just a tough start of the year.“We had a World Club Challenge at the start of the year which is new to us.“Vegas was pretty embarrassing from our point of view. I don’t think it was to do with it – these last few weeks we have been back to our best.”
