COLUMBUS — Eugenio Suárez was in Columbus for his first minor-league rehab game last week, but he spent much of the prior day focusing on something other than his recovery from an oblique strain.During that work day with the Triple-A Louisville Bats, the Reds third baseman watched Bats shortstop Edwin Arroyo intently, something he didn’t have the opportunity to do much of during Reds spring training due to their respective participations in the World Baseball Classic. After a little more than 24 hours, Suárez came to the same conclusion as anyone who has watched the 22-year-old infielder so far this season.Arroyo’s a big leaguer. While Suárez returned to the big leagues at the end of the week, Arroyo finished the series in Columbus with a .344/.402/.595 stat line and hitting safely in four of the five games against the Clippers. Since the start of May, Arroyo has hit seven home runs in 20 games with four doubles and three triples.“He’s just driving the ball. I know he’s done some work with our strength coach Kyle (Laughlin), trying to incorporate his hips a little bit more,” Bats manager Pat Kelly said. “Sometimes he would lock himself out and have to push the ball the other way. Now he’s driving balls. He hit a ball in Louisville the other day over the right center field fence — which is probably 35 feet high — and into the restaurant. (He) really drove it.“You’re just seeing a lot more power from him and balls driven in the gap for doubles. And it’s fun to watch him run. He had a triple here (in Columbus) on a ball hit into the left-field corner and just made it easily.”So what’s keeping him in Louisville at the moment? The short answer is the long shadow of the 6-foot-5 Elly De La Cruz. A natural shortstop, Arroyo was introduced to second base by the Reds last year and he’s started playing third as well.
Still biding his time in Triple A, Edwin Arroyo ‘looks like a big-leaguer right now’
The 22-year-old Reds prospect is hitting .342 with 10 home runs and a .990 OPS in 49 games at Louisville this season.
