The candidate backed by American President Donald Trump, Attorney General Ken Paxton, has defeated Republican Senator John Cornyn, who has been in office since 2003 for four terms, in the Texas primary runoff. In November, therefore, Paxton will face Democratic Representative James Talarico in an election race that could prove crucial in the fight for the Senate majority.

Paxton's victory is the latest success for Trump in his attempt to oust incumbent Republicans he deems insufficiently loyal, as he seeks to strengthen his control over the party, Nbc notes. Trump has also endorsed Republican primary candidates who defeated Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, and several state senators from Indiana.
