But with the boat still out at sea, the situation worsened when the vessel reportedly lost power, leaving the injured youngster stranded.Police alerted the Coast Guard Command Centre about the situation, stating: "He’s been bleeding for two hours, they’ve placed a tourniquet, but he’s bleeding, lost a lot of blood, barely conscious."READ MORE: EasyJet warning ahead of major national transport strike starting tomorrowREAD MORE: UK railway company plunges into liquidation after struggling with debtIt is understood his dad had “almost immediately” used a tourniquet before the arrival of the Galveston Island Beach Patrol at 3.30pm, with the shark bite having happened around two hours earlier.Rescue teams, including the Coast Guard, treated the boy's arm by applying a second tourniquet and he was taken to University of Texas Medical Branch after reaching land. His current condition remains unknown. It has been clarified by Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen that rather than an attack in the water, the shark had been dragged on board. The bite may have occurred as the teen attempted to remove a hook from the shark’s mouth.Article continues below“All the reports were that it was a shark attack, but it wasn’t; [the shark] was actually brought onto the boat and the shark ended up biting [the teen],” Fullen said. “It’s a possibility getting in the water you may get bitten by a shark. It’s like going into the Everglades, you might get bitten by an alligator.”Shark incidents in Texas are unusual, with just 19 recorded since 1911, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History. In its International Shark Attack File (ISAF) it states it investigated 105 alleged shark-human interactions worldwide in 2025.ISAF confirmed 65 unprovoked shark bites on humans and 29 provoked bites, which occur when a human initiates interaction with a shark. The 2025 worldwide figures are in line with the most recent five-year (2020 to 2024) average of 61 incidents annually, according to the ISAF.Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.SharksShark attack
