CHARLOTTE, NC – When Canada Soccer announced men’s national team head coach Jesse Marsch’s contract extension on Monday, with the World Cup just around the corner, it felt like something was missing. When Marsch was first hired in 2024, his official title was MLS Canada Men’s National Team Head Coach. That’s because his salary for his original two-year contract was funded in part by the ownership of Canada’s three respective MLS teams: Toronto FC, the Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal.“The philanthropic generosity of the donors involved was certainly a helpful part of us being able to move forward with the appointment,” Canada Soccer general secretary Kevin Blue said when Marsch was hired. The idea was that rising tides lift all boats, and a healthy and strong Canadian men’s national team — which they have proven to be under Marsch — benefits Canada’s three MLS teams. When Marsch’s extension through the 2030 World Cup was announced Monday, the following “supporters” were listed in a press release as being “instrumental” to Marsch’s contract extension: the Vancouver Whitecaps ownership, Carmie & Joey Saputo Foundation, Seth Boro and Jen Hamilton, the Adnani Family, and a donor who has chosen to remain anonymous.“(Canada Soccer general secretary Kevin Blue) and I have been talking about this for a while,” Marsch said Tuesday of his extension. “I think he had to go around and raise the funds, so that took him a little bit of time. I’m very thankful for all the families that committed to having me here, and I know most of them from all the fundraising we’ve been doing and the faith that they showed in me, and the commitment that they made to me is amazing.”
