The former President of EPFL and IC Professor has been nominated as Chair of the European Research Council (ERC) Identification Committee that will identify new members for the European Research Council's (ERC) governing body, the ERC Scientific Council. The European Commission has announced the establishment of a high-level committee to identify new members for the European Research Council's (ERC) governing body, the ERC Scientific Council.This Identification Committee, comprising six leading scientists, will oversee the renewal of the ERC Scientific Council, a process that is part of the preparation for Horizon Europe 2028-2034, the EU’s forthcoming funding programme for research and innovation.Honorary Professor (IC) and President Emeritus of EPFL Martin Vetterli has been appointed as Committee Chair and will be joined by: Paula Eerola, Research Council of Finland; Heino Falcke, Radboud University Nijmegen Netherlands; Katerina Harvati, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Dept. of Geosciences & Senckenberg Center for Human Evolution and Palaeoenviroments, Germany; Andres Metspalu, University of Tartu, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Institute of Genomics (IG), Estonia; and, Maria Rescigno, Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM), Austria.It is a powerful signal to see Vetterli’s exceptional credentials and leadership experience recognised at the European level, particularly at a moment that is critical for the relationship between Switzerland and Europe.As a major beneficiary of the ERC and a long‑standing advocate for maintaining the highest standards of scientific rigour at the heart of its procedures, EPFL and the School of Computer and Communication Sciences strongly welcomes the European Commission’s clear commitment to excellence embodied in this nomination.
