A widow still wakes up every morning hoping to see her husband’s face, more than a year after the prominent community leader passed away.

Vasa Fia Collins shared the deeply personal insight on Wednesday to mark what would have been her late husband’s birthday, Fa'anānā Efeso Collins, a well-known New Zealand politician who championed Pacific communities in South Auckland.

Fa'anānā died suddenly at the age of 49 after collapsing during an Auckland charity event in February 2024.
