A temporary 50kph speed reduction is set to be in place on part of State Highway 1 on Thursday to bless the site where a Fulton Hogan road worker was killed earlier this month.

The worker was fatally injured after they were hit on the Waikato Expressway on the morning of Tuesday, May 12.

The temporary speed limit, from 9.30am and 12pm, will be in place while crews, alongside iwi, whānau and colleagues, undertake a karakia to bless the site and acknowledge the loss, the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) said on Wednesday.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts remain with the family, friends, and workmates of the worker,” NZTA Waikato Area Manager Andy Oakley said.

“Everyone deserves to return home safely at the end of the day. People working on our roads operate in high-risk environments to keep the state highway network safe for everyone.”
