Israel targeted Mohammad Awda in Gaza, described by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Hamas’s newly appointed armed wing chief replacing Izz Al Haddad.

There has been no official confirmation from the group, and Mr Netanyahu did not say whether the target was killed in the strike.

The Rimal neighbourhood strike killed three people and wounded more than 20, according to Gaza health officials.

Since October 7, 2023, assassinations have depleted the group’s leadership; more than 72,000 Gazans have been killed in Israeli attacks.
