Outgoing Crusaders coach Rob Penney did not appear happy for most of an awkward and uncomfortable three minutes at a press conference confirming his successor.
Penney said he was “disappointed” with the timing after the Crusaders announced that Scott Hansen would be their next head coach on Wednesday.
Hansen, a former All Blacks and Crusaders assistant, will replace Penney on a three-year deal in Super Rugby Pacific from 2027.
Penney had confirmed to the franchise two months ago that he would depart after three seasons in charge, before the Crusaders unveiled Hansen. Penney declined to comment when asked about Hansen.
“Bit disappointed the news is out, but it’s the reality, I guess, of the situation. So now that it’s out, yeah,” Penney said.
