A large truck carrying hydrochloric acid has rolled and spilled some of its load on to a South Waikato road.

Old Taupō Road is currently closed between Wiltsdown and Matanuku Roads, due to the crash, which was firsst reported about 7.10pm on Tuesday evening, police said.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesperson said the large B-train truck and trailer unit rolled on a corner on Old Taupō Road in Wiltsdown, between Tokoroa and Putāruru.

FENZ said they could not onfirm the exact amount that leaked but they worked to contain the spill and monitored the scene overnight with their hazardous substance team waiting for heavy machinery to arrive and right the truck so the acid can safely decanted.
