“I received an award today in Kyiv from Ukrainian President Zelensky himself,” Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced on Facebook. The mayor received the “Savior City” award in the Ukrainian capital, which is given to cities that have done an exceptional job of supporting Ukraine. “Budapest has indeed provided a great deal of tangible assistance,” Karácsony added. He shared that Budapest has supported its sister cities—Berehove and Kyiv—with donations, generators, and other technical equipment. They also helped provide for refugees. “We will continue to do everything we can to make our friends fleeing the war feel at home in our city. (…) But we have done something else as well: we have preserved our moral compass in this era of madness and evil.”“This award is for Budapest, it belongs to the people of Budapest, who showed their solidarity in many ways even amidst the hate campaigns forced upon them. In his speech, President Zelensky specifically highlighted that Budapest went against the foreign policy of the previous government and expressed his hope that there could be a partnership established with the new Hungarian administration,” wrote the mayor. When mayor Karácsony visited Transcarpathia last fall, he took a donation worth five million forints and participated in the opening of the event called “Autumn in Berehove.” In his speech at the time, he said that it had been nearly ten years since Budapest and Berehove signed a sister-city agreement, but he believed that the two cities truly became sisters when the Russian-Ukrainian war broke out.For more quick, accurate and impartial news from and about Hungary, subscribe to the Telex English newsletter!
