The European Commission has confirmed receipt of a letter sent Friday by European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi, in which she said that recent Greek legislative and judicial decisions undermine the EPPO’s ability to operate effectively in Greece.

“The Commission is aware of the amendment to Greek legislation and is examining it,” a spokesperson said during a daily press briefing on Tuesday, adding that the Commission “maintains very good cooperative relations with the Greek authorities” and that “Greece has demonstrated a constructive attitude over time.”

Responding to a question from Kathimerini, the spokesperson declined to comment on any potential next steps, including possible infringement proceedings against Greece.

“We are not speculating on the possible outcome of the examination, which is currently underway,” he said.

Asked whether the dispute could be referenced in this year’s European Commission Rule of Law Report, the spokesperson said the report was still being prepared and that it was therefore too early to specify which issues would be included.
