FRIBOURG, Switzerland — A few members of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization are participating in the IIFH World Championships in Switzerland. They all have a different story to tell.Nearly a month since being eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Sidney Crosby, Parker Wotherspoon, Connor Clifton and Tommy Novak have competed in the tournament. Kyle Dubas and Jason Spezza are also playing a significant role as part of Team Canada management. Here’s some of what I’ve seen on this trip.• It can be difficult to gauge players in this tournament. On one hand, it’s not exactly the A-list of the world’s best players, given that so many of them are still competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs or simply chose to skip the tournament. Still, there is real talent here, and, for many of these players, this is a real opportunity for national glory and a chance to showcase themselves to NHL teams. So, real evaluations for certain players can be tricky. That said, Crosby has been quite good, better than his statistics would indicate, in this tournament. His skating looks a tick better than in the playoffs, and probably for good reason. Crosby was obviously healthy enough to play in the postseason, and I don’t think his knee was an issue against the Flyers. But I think he’s feeling even healthier. Plus, as he often says, the more he plays, the better he plays. Crosby has seven points in six games. Canada’s only player to generate more points in this tournament is his linemate, Macklin Celebrini.Crosby also turned back the clock against Denmark in a mesmerizing performance, notching four primary assists — all of them brilliant — in the third period of a game that was scoreless through two periods. All in all, he’s looked quite good.• There is a concerning stat, however.Crosby doesn’t have a goal in six games here. Including the postseason, he finished his NHL season by scoring only three goals in his last 24 games. So, in what surely is a first in his hockey life, Crosby has just three goals in 30 games. He wasn’t 100 percent in all of those games, and he was still plenty productive. He’s got 28 assists in those games, after all.
