Aly RaismanZoe Rain, Rain StudioPlenty of people consider shopping an Olympic sport. But advocate and best-selling author Aly Raisman, who holds six Olympic medals across two games from 2012 and 2016, might actually qualify as an Olympic shopper too. As the third-most decorated American gymnast in history, she has won three gold, two silver and one bronze medal, and served as captain of her team for both games.Instead of "The Fierce Five" or "The Final Five," as her teams were known in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, respectively, when it comes to shopping, her teammate is her mother, Lynn Raisman. “My mom and I have been shopping together at TJ Maxx for as long as I can remember, and at TJ Maxx there are always so many little gifts and treasures that you can find,” says Aly, a Maxxinista who has partnered with the retailer. “They have everything from skincare to hair care, workout clothes, nice gowns we've gotten for fancy events to home—everything. It's really fun to come here and spend time with my mom and sisters, and you can find things for all of us in the family, so we love TJ Maxx, and we're both so excited to partner with them.”As a long-time shopper, Aly knows there are tricks to scoring the best deals. “My mom's an expert at this,” she says. “If you peruse the clearance stuff sometimes there is a gem that for whatever reason got missed.” She also beelines for The Runway section, TJ Maxx’s premium designer department. “We have a TJ Maxx on Needham Street in Boston that, in my opinion, is definitely one of the best The Runways in the country. They have incredible stuff there. If there's a pair of boots that I've been watching, my mom's really good at finding it at TJ Maxx. It's like TJ Maxx can read our minds of what we want and then they find it for a better price.”Aly Raisman shopping with her mom, Lynn Raisman, at TJ MaxxZoe Rain, Rain StudioSince Aly grew up shopping with her mom, the two have inspired and influenced each other’s personal style. “We’re a similar shoe size—I'm a half a size bigger—so we joke to my dad that if we are buying multiple shoes, it's like we're sharing it, so it's not really as much money as you think,” Aly says. “It's girl math, but we get to share a lot. We share a lot of bags as well. We do have very similar style in that way. But I think my style has changed more over the years. In the last several years I wear a lot more dresses. I like a lot more floral patterns. We're both wearing more nature-y stuff; we both incorporate our love for nature and gardening into what we wear.”The mother-daughter duo encourages each other to experiment and play more with their personal style, often encouraging one another to try something they typically wouldn’t. “Aly will pull something out that sometimes I don't know about and then she puts on and I’m like, ‘oh my god, that's so amazing,’” Lynn says. “Sometimes we feed off each other. We both know what each other like.”On a recent trip to TJ Maxx, Aly ended up styling her mother. “We went shopping for each other this morning, and my mom had walked by this green and white floral dress that she didn't know that I had picked out for her and said, ‘that dress is so cute.’ Then I showed her the shoes, and she said, ‘those are in my car.’” They often read one another’s minds when it comes to shopping. “I bought this dress first, and I was like, you have to order this in your size; you're gonna love it,” Lynn says.Aly Raisman competing on the balance beam during the 2016 Rio Olympics (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)Getty ImagesAly plans to stock her summer closet with dresses, her go-to item for the season. “I'm really into sundresses right now,” she says. “I love tea length-style dress. I love a very timeless classic, feminine sundress. That's my new look over the last few years; now I'm obsessed with them. I used to gravitate more towards a minidress, but I feel really good in a dress that's to the floor, or a tea length sundress.” She likes to pair them with walkable kitten heels. As for Lynn, these days she’s all about a matching set. “I'm really into sets because you can dress them up with a cute little heel, or down and wear them on the airplane with sneakers,” she says. “It's easy, and they're so cute.”It’s not only themselves they enjoy shopping for—they also love shopping for their dogs. “We have a full house of dogs, so it makes it really fun,” Aly says, who had been eyeing a white and pink floral dog bed for her pup. “I love getting my dog, Milo, toys from here, because there's just so many options, and he's very spoiled. He sometimes thinks that when I'm opening up a gift, that it might be for him.”
