The Industry and Back to Black star, 29, has opened up about her recent diagnosis and how intrusive thoughts led her to believe she had "manifested" her thyroid cancer in 202014:11, 26 May 2026Industry star Marisa Abela has revealed she has been diagnosed with a life-changing mental health condition after struggling for years with symptoms she never understood. The actress, 29, who played tragic late singer Amy Winehouse in the 2024 biopic Back to Black, has opened up about her recent diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), admitting it came as complete shock."I just have been diagnosed with OCD. I never thought I had it because I don't care about things being clean," Marisa said in a new interview. "I thought it was about cleanliness. Obviously, I'm not dirty, but my room's a mess. I'll come home from work and there's no way I'm getting home and unpacking my suitcase the day I land."The BAFTA-winning actress, who married fellow actor Jamie Bogyo, 31, in September last year, explained how she finally sought help after realising her mental health symptoms were taking over her life."I just can't turn my brain off and I'm thinking the same things all the time, and I'm always making lists, and I'm always being like, these are the tasks that I have," she revealed. "I have a lot of stress and I kept telling myself, oh, I have so much stress in my life. And I was creating this whirlwind."OCD is a mental health condition characterised by unwanted, intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours or mental rituals. While many people associate the disorder with cleanliness and order, it can show up in many ways, including rigid list-making, inability to stop obsessing over particular thoughts, and consuming anxiety about things going wrong.Marisa added: "I really believe words have power. I believe in manifestation and believe I've willed everything, both good and bad, into my life. And that makes me scared. It's so scary because you're like, uh-oh, I'm thinking this thing and therefore it's going to happen. It's like having a big red button and someone's like, don't press it. And then your brain is like, press it, press it, press it."The Brighton-born star tragically revealed that her OCD had convinced her she had caused her own cancer diagnosis in 2020, when she was just 23."I convinced myself that I'd thought it into existence. I mean obviously that's crazy. But I remember when I got the diagnosis, I was like, I knew it," she confessed.Marisa underwent an eight-hour surgery to remove a thyroid tumour and will be on medication for the rest of her life, but is now in remission. The star, who shot to fame playing ambitious graduate Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the BBC and HBO series Industry, said the diagnosis has helped her understand herself better."It's good that people are talking about it now. I think it's great that there will be a generation of people that grow up knowing that it's not just like, oh, I didn't lock the front door," she added on the Therapuss podcast. "Everything bad that happens, you're like, I knew it. And like, oh my god. It's insane."Article continues belowMarisa has been exploring alternative therapies including acupuncture to help manage her symptoms. "I'm into anything that's a good thing that isn't therapy as well," she said. "I immediately feel like I can be free."
