The first batch of a 3.5 million dose consignment of Biogénesis Bagó FMD vaccines arrived on Sunday

South Africa’s battle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has intensified after the Pretoria High Court opened the door for private-sector vaccine procurement and administration.

FMD Response SA, an industry body representing more than 250 farmers, welcomed the ruling following an application brought by Sakeliga, the South African Agri Initiative and Free State Agriculture.

The group said the judgment could significantly accelerate vaccination efforts needed to stop transmission between herds.

The outbreak has already spread across all nine provinces, with more than 1,300 outbreak cases recorded nationally earlier this year, while government has targeted vaccinating 80% of cattle by December.
