Multiple people have reportedly died after a train slammed into a school bus at a level crossing in Belgium.The collision happened in Buggenhout, in the country’s East Flanders region, according to Reuters.Local reports say the vehicle involved was a minibus used for school transport. Early reports suggest the warning systems at the crossing were active at the time of the crash.Belgian broadcaster VRT NWS reported CCTV footage showed the crossing barriers were lowered and warning lights flashing red when the train struck the minibus, which was transporting school students.“The collision took place at 8.08am. Footage shows that the barriers were down and the traffic lights were red,” Belgian rail track operator spokesman Thomas Baeken said.“We do not know how the accident could have happened. That is for the police and the public prosecutor’s office to investigate.”Baeken said the train driver had already activated the emergency brake before impact and the train “was already braking” when the collision occurred.He added rail authorities were cooperating fully to “understand how this tragic accident came about”.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was “heartbroken” by the disaster.“My deepest condolences go out to the victims’ families and their loved ones,” she said.“Today, Europe grieves with Belgium.”
