The 2026 NHL Draft is shaping up to be heavily defined by the blue line. While dynamic wingers Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg will be among the very first players selected, the quality and depth of the defensive crop this year is excellent. Seven defensemen currently make up my top nine overall prospects for the 2026 draft. There is no clear consensus on who the top defense prospect is, although Sault Ste. Marie’s Chase Reid is the likeliest candidate to be picked first.Today, we will further analyze this premium defense crop. I’ve lined up the top five defenders against each other to see how they compare, breaking down their specific tool grades and looking at what NHL teams will be thinking about when deciding how to sort them out at the top of their lists. HV71’s Malte Gustafsson is right on the bubble of this group, and while I think he is a candidate to go between Nos. 6-12, he’s unlikely to be the first defenseman picked.Chase ReidReid is a 6-foot-3, right-shot defenseman who flies around the ice. His high-end skills and offensive IQ, along with his pace, allow him to generate high-danger chances consistently. He’s made significant defensive progressions, using his long reach, outstanding feet and compete level to take on tough matchup minutes and make a lot of stops. He checks all the boxes athletically and statistically, being a top player in the OHL this season, in his draft-minus-one season and again at the World Juniors for Team USA. If he hits, you could be looking at a two-way minutes-eating No. 1 defenseman who can score at a significant clip.Keaton VerhoeffThe 6-foot-4 Verhoeff is mobile for his size and can make plays. When he's dialed in, he threads difficult passes and unleashes a heavy shot from the point, all while being a competitive two-way player. There are occasional questions about his decision-making and overall offensive projection, but his physical profile provides a massive safety net. If he hits his ceiling, he projects as a foundational piece for a winning team.
