A teenager has been arrested and three police vehicles rammed after a stolen vehicle was tracked across Canterbury, causing a major highway bridge closure.
The incident began at about 2pm when police were alerted to the stolen vehicle in the Christchurch suburb of Bishopdale. Officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, but the driver failed to do so.
Police monitored the vehicle as it continued to travel and deployed road spikes due to concerns over the manner of driving.
The vehicle was eventually successfully blocked on Main South Road / State Highway 1 at the Rakaia Bridge. During the incident, the driver rammed three police vehicles before being taken into custody without incident shortly after 3pm.
Two people suffered minor injuries during the event.
