Between Michael Jordan toasting Pep Guardiola’s retirement, Bunny Shaw revealing a shock U-turn and Bernardo Silva retelling that John Stones once called him a “little soft c***”, it is hard to know where to start with Manchester City’s ‘After Party’.It had felt like a baffling event in the build-up. City had said their goodbyes to Guardiola, Bernardo and Stones 24 hours earlier, after the final game of the season against Aston Villa. What more could there be to say after all the guards of honour and speeches?Yet City nailed it, from start to finish, somehow giving their fans something fresh and enjoyable, yet still touching, to draw a line under the Guardiola era. Doves had already performed their biggest hits before Vincent Kompany and Jack Grealish carried out trophies and the players took turns to ask the manager about some of his most viral moments. The afternoon started with a four-bus parade starting in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, carrying the men’s team, women’s team, U-18’s team and staff, but the main event was the final destination, the Co-Op Live arena, in the shadow of the Etihad Stadium. From the moment two buses pulled into the arena, either side of a stage that would host a fairly surreal team picture, it was a night that nobody present will ever forget.Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez were involved in a running champagne battle, Rodri lapped up adapted chants of Gala’s Freed From Desire and Kolo Toure was pushed to the front for a rendition of the, ‘Kolo, Yaya’ chant, before the women’s team, WSL champions for the first time in 10 years, took to the stage.Shaw, the star striker who had appeared set to join rivals Chelsea this summer, was suddenly thrust to the front and asked about “the elephant in the room” regarding her future. Immediately, there was a sense of, ‘Surely they would not be asking this if she was leaving?’ but for a second it all felt rather awkward, because she did not say anything at all. Finally, though, she broke the tension.Shaw surprised everyone with a new contract announcement (Lewis Storey/Getty Images)“I’m still here, I’m still hungry and there’s no place I’d rather be!”, she said, which still sounded like there might be scope for her leaving, but then she confirmed she was staying after all, and soon came confirmation that she has signed a four-year contract.
