Expecting Too Much

The first reason comes from the sheer hype built around this event. Outside observers were looking for Boeing to make a 500-plane sale as far back as August of 2025. Bloomberg first brought out the idea that Boeing could sell a whole lot of planes out there, and the market just stuck with the idea.

China and Boeing started dealing in 2026, so for nearly a year before the two sides actually sat down to talk, the market had already basically baked in the idea that Boeing could sell 500 planes to China. And while there is still room to do just that—President Trump first remarked that Boeing could sell another 550 planes later on, up to a total of 750—the order stands at 200, and may stay there for the foreseeable future.
