Dr Montien Kanasawadse, director-general of Thailand's Department of Disease Control, said the World Health Organization on May 17 declared the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus in Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern, The Nation newspaper reported.

He said there is currently no vaccine or officially approved treatment for the strain, while the outbreak in the DRC is showing signs of worsening. As a result, several countries have tightened surveillance measures for travelers from high-risk areas.

Thailand has stepped up screening procedures for travelers arriving from Ebola-affected countries, Bangkok Post reported.

As of May 22, the country had recorded 10 travelers arriving from affected areas, eight from Uganda and two from the DRC.

All were screened upon arrival and showed no symptoms.
