The Itsekiri Grassroots Coalition (IGC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders to intervene in the controversy surrounding the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) proposed delineation of units, wards and constituencies in the Warri Federal Constituency.

The appeal follows reports of tensions linked to the proposal. The group also referenced claims that Itsekiri youths, under the aegis of Ugbarajo Itsekiri Youths (UIY), who staged a peaceful protest on Monday, May 25, at INEC headquarters in Abuja, were allegedly attacked. These claims have not been independently verified.

Reacting to the development, the National Coordinator of IGC, Prince Collins Oritsetimeyin Edema, stated that no citizen should face intimidation, harassment, or assault for expressing concerns in a democratic society.

Prince Edema further expressed reservations about the proposed ward delineation, describing it as a move that could affect the political representation and historical identity of the Itsekiri people in the Warri Federal Constituency. He cautioned that any process perceived as unfair or exclusionary could heighten tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence in the Niger Delta.
