Peter Murrell was chief executive of the SNP for 22 years. Now, he is about to spend his first night in prison, after pleading guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 from the party.

Police said he diverted cash into his own accounts “to bankroll the lavish lifestyle he craved but could not afford”.

The SNP’s current leader, John Swinney, called it “an overwhelming betrayal”.
