We dipped into it on Friday, now it’s time to look at The Mandalorian and Grogu with some slightly more complete numbers. Per Variety, the film made an estimated worldwide box office of $163 million. The majority of that came from domestic markets, overcoming what seemed like a weak debut when compared to 2018’s Solo. As a more family-friendly entry the series has seen in quite a while, it looks to be doing fine (relative to the $165 million it cost to make), while still not being a record breaker like other prior Star Wars films. Word of mouth seemed to do The Mandalorian and Grogu favors over the extended weekend, and Disney hopes that helps elevate the film in the weeks to come. (As Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2 have proven, it’s a good strategy.) Despite online discourse and mixed reviews, general audiences seem to really like Pedro Pascal hanging out with his frog baby, but you know what else they like? Curry Barker’s Obsession, which actually saw a 39% domestic boost in the typical three-day weekend period. It’s currently closing in on $80 million worldwide, which will likely grow further thanks to its own word of mouth. There are a few big movies in the next few weeks, including Backrooms (May 29) and Masters of the Universe (June 5) that’ll cut into Mando and Grogu’s box office haul during summer movie season. But if you think this movie determines Star Wars’ theatrical future, keep an eye on Star Wars: Starfighter instead. That film, directed by Shawn Levy and headlined by Ryan Gosling, may say more about the franchise, since it lacks a nostalgic safety net. But we’ll find out for sure when it releases May 28, 2027.
