Nigeria has spent about N12.63trillion on debt servicing between January and September 2025, more than four times the N3.1trillion released for capital and infrastructural development within the same period, according to figures from the 2025 amended budget implementation report.

An analysis of the budget performance document indicated that debt obligations continued to consume a substantial portion of government spending, overshadowing allocations to infrastructure and development projects.
The report showed that domestic debt servicing accounted for the largest share of the expenditure, with the Federal Government spending about N6.22 trillion on domestic debt obligations during the nine-month period. Foreign debt servicing, on the other hand, amounted to about N6.29 trillion.
