Justin Berl / Getty ImagesMay 25, 2026 10:14 am EDT Updated Max Domi’s status for the start of next season is uncertain.The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Monday morning that Domi suffered “complications” from a previously undisclosed surgery to address an undisclosed “issue” the team says he played through last season.He will be out “indefinitely” and re-evaluated at the start of training camp, according to a release from the team.Domi played in 80 games last season. He didn’t miss a single game to injury, though he was unavailable at the start of training camp due to an injury that was never disclosed. Additionally, Domi was scratched twice by now-former head coach Craig Berube and struggled on both ends of the ice all year.

Domi has two seasons remaining on the four-year contract he signed in 2024 at a cap hit of $3.75 million.His status on next year’s team felt like a point of question given his contract and struggles; much less so, though, after John Chayka was hired as general manager earlier this month. Domi and Chayka have a longstanding relationship dating back to Domi’s time playing for the London Knights.Domi’s role with the Leafs in a Chayka regime figured to be a minor subplot at camp. His health only adds to those questions.
